David White

Born and brought up in Sunderland where I attended Southmoor Technical Grammer School, I have happy memories of family life, coming from a family of four; some of my best memories are of being part of highly successful school football and cricket and basketball teams. Although I have spent a considerable part of my working life away from home including two years in Saudi Arabia, I managed to withstand the temptation to move away from the area and have maintained my home in the north east of England.

Despite long periods working away from home, and being career orientated, spending most of my life at work, I am happy to say that I’m happily married with two grown up sons, and four wonderful grand-children, all of whom are an integral part of my current life, alongside my love of sport (all be it the armchair variety).

Being a Glass Technologist my experience and background has been gained in the engineering and manufacturing fields. I started my working life as a Technical Clerk with Thorn E.M.I. Radio Valves & Tubes - a factory making black & white television tubes, (which gives a clue to my age), moving on to James.A.Jopling (Corning) as a Supervisory Apprentice - my first step on the managerial ladder. Through what now seems like a lifetime, step by step I progressed to being a Company Director serving on a number of Boards. I have also had the experience of working in self employment as an Independent Consultant & Professional Trainer. When I left my last 'real' job, as Site, Manufacturing & Operations Director of Royal Brierley Crystal in Birmingham, in 2005 - to facilitate the sale of the business to an American Retail Group, I returned to my native north east not knowing where my career could or would take me.

At the crossroads of my working life I decided to join the public sector, in the field of Business Advice, working for two years with the Enterprise Agency in Bishop Auckland for Business Link, and more recently with SASDA. I am in what I can only term a very privileged position, being able to help and advise new business start-ups and existing businesses using my first hand experience and knowledge gained through my work in business and industry.
